3 Wedding Rules to Break

Weddings are laced with tradition. Whether they are cultural or family specific, there is typically a set of rules the bride and groom are expected to follow on their wedding day.

The rules can vary greatly. They can specify the color of the bridal gown or demand a certain action be performed during the ceremony, be it breaking glass, releasing doves, tying a rope around the wrists of the newlyweds or even having them saw a log in half to test the couple's strength.

And while traditions like the ones mentioned above are deeply rooted in culture, there are others that came about more as a result of a social trend.

It is these 'rules' that we are so glad brides all over the world are breaking and ensuring their wedding is exactly the way they want it to be.

Today we'd like to share some of these 'rules' with you and help you consider alternatives to what others may consider the norm.

1. Wearing a White Wedding Dress

Did you know that the white wedding dress trend has nothing to do with innocence and purity but rather Queen Victoria's choice to wear a simple gown for her wedding ceremony?

It's true! We even wrote a whole blog post about it

Many brides today are choosing to opt for either subtle shades of pastels, such as lavender, blue or pale gold. Or going with bold colors and leaving white behind altogether.

2. Having Bridesmaids Wear Matching Gowns

There is no wedding rule book that demands that your bridesmaids wear matching gowns. More and more brides opt to vary the look of the ladies that stand by their side, be it with alternative necklines, dress lengths or textures.

Better yet, have the dresses vary in all of the above. Find subtle shade differences to tie the look together yet keep each individual looking and feeling their best in a gown of their choice.

3. Hosting a Wedding in a Hotel or a Banquet Hall

There are so many things to love about a wedding that takes place in a unique location, be it in the mountains, on the beach or in an old brewery.

Besides presenting you with endless choices of gorgeous backdrops for your wedding photos, the location can tie into your wedding theme as much as every other detail.

Choose mountains if you are an outdoorsy couple, the beach if you are laid-back and want to combine the ceremony and reception venue into one, or a winery if you are both lovers of grapes.

Make your wedding location as unique as you are for an unforgettable wedding day.

While we only chose to highlight three wedding rules to break for your own wedding, there are many other customizations you can enact to make your wedding be truly yours.

Whether it's opting out of wedding favors and choosing to donate to a local charity you both support, or walking down the aisle with your four-legged friend, we urge you to follow your heart and cater your wedding to you and your future spouse.

And whether you choose a non-traditional wedding gown or a white one, we would love to create it for you here at Dream Dresses by PMN.
